Free PC Security Software Reviews - How Good Is Free?

Free PC Security Softwar

It can be tempting to install free PC security software on your computer, but more important than than the fact that it comes without a price tag is the question if it will protect your system sufficiently. Can free security software keep your computer free from viruses and malware as well as protect your personal data against identity theft?

It's fair to say that this is not an easy question. The short answer is: yes, there are very good software products available that can keep your system and personal data safe, especially if you compose your own kit, but paid software tends to have more and better features and if you go for a complete security suite, you will get a package that is more user friendly, too.

Before I discuss any individual free PC security software products, I would like to highlight some important pros and cons of choosing free solutions.

Pros

  • The most obvious one: it's free. It can easily save you $100 or more on a yearly basis.
  • You can compose your own security kit. For example, you can use a firewall from one manufacturer and an antivirus program from another.
  • The same goes for anti-spyware tools. This allows you to pick the best of all breeds. More safety!

Cons

  • Creating your own security kit is more work and requires knowledge of all the different components to find out what's best.
  • Programs from different manufacturers are not always compatible.
  • Some free security software products lack automatic updates or real-time protection against computer viruses.
  • You need to make sure that every software product is up-to-date all the time.
  • Free software often comes with limited technical support, if at all.
  • Some products come with annoying ads.

Most free PC security software are separate programs such as firewalls, antivirus software, anti-spyware tools and anti-spam. However, there are also some free security suites available: packages that include many or all of the aforementioned tools.

The advantages of using a suite over creating your own security kit are:

  • The different components were designed to work well together.
  • All components are updated automatically.
  • There is only one interface for you to work with.
